st john's cathedral
The challenge of this project was fitting a multitude of new programmatic requirements into the fixed existing floor area of this historic Catholic cathedral, all with an eye on budget and complicated city and historic planning and zoning code requirements. The design approach was to make the chapel interior reflect the traditional “crypt” chapels of early Christian churches, with elements borrowed from the main cathedral; while the rest of the basement was completely renovated to accommodate a busy school cafeteria, multipurpose room, meeting rooms, and more. The end result is a blend of the prayerful and practical, and a flexible space to serve a growing community for the next century.
